Sony has announced a new compact system camera – NEX-5N to slot into its existing NEX line-up, with the latest Sony NEX-5N featuring an improved 16.1 megapixel APS-C sensor compared to its 14.2 megapixel predecessor NEX-5.

Made from light magnesium alloy, the NEX-5N is just 23.3mm at the slimmest point and includes the same quick shutter lag as found on the new NEX-7. With a release time lag of just 0.02 seconds, it is the fastest in the world. An improved autofocus algorhythm doubles the readout speed from the image sensor and results in an AF that is significantly faster than the current NEX-5 model.
The Sony NEX-5N has a 10fps continuous shooting mode just like its bigger brother, comes with a touch-enabled 3in LCD screen and packs a upgraded BIONZ processor that can ramp the ISO up to 25,600

Due for release later next month, we are yet to hear a confirmed pricetag for the new NEX-5N but we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, for those of you who have been interested in Sony’s NEX line up, here’s how the NEX-5N stacks up against its predecessor NEX-5 (courtesy of Dpreview):

The thin and light S20 camcorder features 4x digital zoom, the ability to take 5MP stills and costs $180, while the H30, with its 5x optical zoom and 10MP still shooting goes for $250. Last but not least, the X100 is priced at $400 and has 10x optical zoom.

We briefly touched on Sony’s latest developments in the ultra compact DSLR field back in February and it was then that we learnt the direction in which Sony would soon be expanding their Alpha series DSLRs. Officially announced yesterday were the NEX-5 and NEX-3, both of which will be new additions to Sony’s DSLR lineup, available from this summer.

The NEX-5 and NEX-3 are the first α cameras featuring Sweep Panorama. Just press the shutter button and swing the camera side-to-side or up and down. A high-speed burst of frames is stitched together automatically to create detail-packed 23 megapixel panoramas with a 226 degree effective angle of view4. Panoramic files can also be enjoyed in stunning 3D on compatible BRAVIA™ 3D televisions.5
As previously introduced on the DSLR-A550, Auto HDR has been further refined. The NEX-5 and NEX-3 can now shoot a high-speed burst of three images at different exposure values that are electronically combined in the camera. This produces a single High Dynamic Range image with extended highlight and shadow detail.
Both cameras come supplied with a super-compact clip-on flash that attaches via the smart accessory terminal when needed for low-light shooting. Other optional accessories include the FDA-SV1 Optical Viewfinder plus colour coordinated cases and shoulder straps.
The NEX-5 and NEX-3 system cameras from Sony are available from summer 2010.
